The following issues will be discussed with illustrations from Art history and Tony's own work-

  • Format. Rectangles ,squares, circles, frieze etc.

  • Symmetry. Asymmetry, Balance, Tension.

  • Movement of the eye around the picture. Focal points.

  • Ideals. Harmony, Golden section, Classical form.

  • The Picture Plane. Depth, recession, illusion.

  • Figure/ground relationships. Interaction between background and subject.

  • Light, colour

  • Challenging the rules.

 

 

 

Landscape and Meaning                                                                          Slide lecture by Tony Jackson

The development of landscape from being just a backdrop to human stories to being a form in it's own right. The ways in which moods such as beauty, calm, energy, fear and mystery are conveyed will be discussed.

  • Pre- Renaissance.

  • Renaissance, Leonardo, Breughel, Bosch.

  • Classicism. Claude Lorraine etc.

  • Romanticism. Constable, Turner, Friedrich, John Martin

  • Symbolism. Landscape as metaphor

  • Realism, Impressionism

  • Post Impressionism. Gauguin, Van Gogh, Cezanne, Influence of Japanese prints

  • Modernism. Cubism, Fauvism, Surrealism, Abstraction


Tony Jackson can provide his own laptop,projector and screen for such lectures. The venue must be able to provide some blackout unless the evenings in the darker part of the year are used.
